Welcome to a tour of the ever eclectic...
Central BURNET ROAD
Our first stop, Taco Shack, where the chorizo, eggs and tortillas are the freshest in Austin. Meet Yoli and Orlando. Behind this great man, you'll find this great woman. Orlando grew up here in this neighborhood and lives here in Allandale still. In fact, he worked as a teenager in the store next to our studio. In addition to his many business successes, Orlando and Yoli still support the neighborhood, the local schools, and all that makes Burnet Road pretty cool.
Moving a little north, let's stop next at Pacha . That's Laurant in the back which is where you'll find him inside. He's the great chef who is married to Julie [front]. Julie and Susanne [sisters] started this coffee shop before Laurent asked Julie to marry. Since his arrival this wonderful little coffee shop just got better and better.
Just up a bit and across the road,
please pull in at Pit #7 .
Roma has been servin it up on Burnet Road
for 27 years. Stop in and ask her. Or talk
with her son, Jeff, about what
real Texas barbeque is and why its different
from South Carolina.
The ideal place to go when your car is on the bum is a place where you can TRUST the mechanic to do you right. That's what you get when you take your car problem to Wyn's Arbor Auto Works. You may spend just as much time talking to Kat. She's in charge of keeping track of customer happiness, ordering parts, and she'll even call you a week later to see if you're still happy with the work. That's some good honest Burnet Road integrity for you there.
What would it be like to be a chicken
named Red who lives behind a tavern? What would it be like
to have throngs surround your cage betting on your bingo flooring?
For the true Burnet Road experience you must come meet Red on
late afternoon Sunday and witness Chicken Shit Bingo for yourself.
Have a look at Ginny & Red.
You have your choice of seven days in a week but make sure
you make it on a Sunday eventually. Dale Watson is a regular
on Thursday nights and that's wonderful, too.
What cool street could possible have credentials without a proper tattoo and piercing parlor? No ordinary tattoos, these are ATOMIC tatoos. Justin is the owner but there are several other talented artists to arrange your body art with.
There's a new kid on the block
and she brought ice cream.
Amy's just boughta hunk
of beautiful Burnet Road and we are happy.
Opening in April, Amy, her hubby Steve, and
architect Michael Hsu have big plans.
We expect ice cream AND burgers AND fun.
This photo was taken about 30 seconds
after Amy and Steve's son, Henry, had his first taste
of ice cream EVER. He seemed very
excited about his second taste.
Winner of the "I've been here longer than all y'all" contest is Frank Bomar. Pivotal player and builder of Burnet Road. In fact, my studio was built in 1953 and I understand the lumber came from Frank whose family took root in the Burnet lumber business in 1947. Not your Home Depot, this is called Home Lumber and you can pick up planks, 2 x 4's, or trim here along with screws by the pound. You can also arrange to have traditional wooden screens built, rebuilt, or repaired. This is what a real lumberyard is all about. Smell the pine.
